Is There a Solution for Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation may not be a serious skin problem, but it can definitely cause serious issues with your complexion. These three state-of-the-art treatments can help even out your skin tone for beautiful, healthy skin.

Age spots, sun spots, liver spots: It doesn’t matter what you call them, those tiny areas of “extra” color can take a toll on a clear, healthy complexion. Worse still, these isolated areas of hyperpigmentation tend to become more common with age, leaving skin looking worn and uncared for, despite your best efforts.

At North Texas Med360, Yamuna Gurrapu, MD, and Jenine Referente, FNP, help patients enjoy clearer complexions with state-of-the-art therapies focused on improving skin tone and supporting better skin health overall. In this post, our team reviews three advanced treatment options that can help you fade away dark spots and enjoy a more beautiful complexion.

Why hyperpigmentation happens

Hyperpigmentation happens when your skin produces excess melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. While it’s typically harmless, dark areas can take a dramatic toll on your complexion and your confidence, especially when these areas occur in noticeable areas like the face.

Hyperpigmentation can happen for different reasons. Sun exposure is a major culprit for many people. Over time, years of ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure stimulate your skin to produce extra melanin as a protective measure against the negative effects associated with UV rays. These melanin deposits build up, creating localized areas of darkened skin.

Hormonal fluctuations can also play a role in hyperpigmentation, including changes associated with pregnancy, menopause, and even hormonal forms of birth control. Some other types of medication increase your risk of hyperpigmentation, too, and so can skin conditions like acne.

Improve skin tone with these options

Hyperpigmentation occurs in specific layers of your skin, and to fade discoloration and “smooth out” your complexion, you need treatments that focus on those layers. Fortunately, our team offers several options that can help.

Facials

Facials use a combination of treatments and techniques to gently exfoliate the upper layers of skin, then deeply nourish it with moisturizers and other products chosen for your skin’s needs as well as your aesthetic goals.

Our team offers state-of-the-art DiamondGlow® facials combining dermabrasion, extraction, and infusion using proprietary SkinMedica® Pro-Infusion serums. In addition to fading hyperpigmented lesions over time, regular facials combat age-related changes and provide a foundation for custom skincare focused on your skin’s evolving needs.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels use special serums to gently loosen and lift the uppermost layers of skin, layers where hyperpigmentation and other types of damage are found. In the days following a peel, those layers slough off, revealing healthier, smoother, more evenly toned skin beneath.

Peels are available in varying strengths, enabling us to customize your treatment based on your needs. We also offer the popular BioRePeelCl₃®, a special product that renews skin without significant peeling.

Microneedling

Microneedling uses a special device studded with very tiny needles to create a series of controlled “micro-injuries” in the upper layers of your skin. The depth of the needles can be adjusted based on your own unique aesthetic goals.

During treatment, we pass the device over the surface of your skin, creating tiny wounds that, in turn, break up pigmented tissue and stimulate new collagen development. Over the next few weeks, your body eliminates the fragmented pigments, revealing skin that’s firmer, smoother, and even-toned.

Enjoy a healthier complexion

These treatments don’t just help fade away dark spots, they support healthier skin by providing your skin with the care and nourishment it needs to thrive at every age.
